That is a similar downswing to the one seen nationwide, as the new divorce rate fell to 7.6 from 9.7 per 1,000 women. The nationwide decrease in divorces came as fewer people got married across the country: There were 16.3 new marriages per 1,000 women in 2019, down from 17.6 a decade earlier. However, Michigan saw a slight uptick in new marriages over the same time, up to 15.9 from 15.6 per 1,000 women over the decade.Michigan was 30th among all states for divorce rates, while the state was in the middle of the pack when it came to new marriages. The Census data is based on rates per 1,000 women age 15 or older. The data comes amid what some had expected to be a spike in divorces during the coronavirus pandemic. That uptick has yet to pan out.Recent data show divorce is down in four of the five states reviewed by the Institute for Family Studies. Bradford Wilcox, a senior fellow of the Institute for Family Studies. “For many couples who make it through this pandemic together, then, their marriages will likely emerge stronger and more stable, and that is a bit of good news to take away from this year of mostly bad news.”Speak With a Grand Rapids Divorce Lawyer TodayIf you have unsuccessfully tried couple’s counseling and are considering a divorce or grappling with related issues like asset division, spousal support, or child custody and visitation, it is vital to have an experienced attorney in your corner.
